But then how down at heel and scuffed and holed,

suffering the strokes and heart attacks of shoes,

they’d been at the finish, as their knowledge grew,

and in the rise, breaking, and fall of the smallest verse

they could trace a wave that had passed through seven seas

since earth’s beginning. Just before the end,

I recall, they carried me once to joke in pure

American, as we ordered lunch, with a young waitress,

about erotic walks they’d never take again.

And when the girl would smile indulgently

but with true happiness at an urge still strong

in such decay and simplicity, then male and female

were one: and so perfectly at last they translated

the happy despair of some dead epigram they loved.
